Dost thou want to be a pirate?

I think everyone has wanted to be a pirate at one point in their life. Especially when you’re a child. Thrills, excitement, danger, sword fights, and all of the swashbuckling fun that goes with being a scallywag. There are very few adventures you can undertake as an adult that hold that kind of wide-eyed wonderment, and even fewer jobs you can wind up having that fill you with that enthralling sense of fascination.

I’ve been very, VERY lucky the last 3 years of my adult life to have such a job. But I’m not sailing the high seas, raising a flag with a jolly roger on it up the mast, drinking obscene amounts of rum or pretending like I know how to handle a sword (well…that’s not entirely true, I do enjoy drinking obscene amounts of rum now and again) No, I’ve been coloring comic books and doing illustration and digital painting commission work, but mostly coloring comics.

So while that can be a pretty exciting job, that allows you a lot more freedom and the occasional moment of wide-eyed wonderment, it can also at times be the thing that causes the kind of stress which drives you to want to drink obscene amounts of rum for one reason or another. Trust me on this.

Taking into account all of the positive and negative aspects that come along with being a freelance artist, it is still almost like stumbling upon buried treasure when you come across a project that gives you freedom, enjoyment and offers you the opportunity to grow as an artist. So I was more than a little wide-eyed with wonder when I was given the opportunity to work on my next comic coloring project……

Neverland.

THE Neverland, of Peter Pan fame. My absolute favorite story of all time. Everything that you ever dreamed of doing when you were a child, meeting Indians, giant pirate ships, rescuing maidens in distress, fighting pirates and fighting WITH pirates, living in a treehouse, mermaids, fairies, sword fights, danger, excitement, and lots and lots of FUN. Especially when you take into account the fact that THIS version of Neverland is going to be a darker, more twisted version of the classic tale, complete with all sorts of new interpretations on the characters we all know, and introducing some new ones as well. All of the things I love, and an opportunity to really showcase all of the strongest elements in my work.

You can read more about the series here,

Neverland Interview

and yes….Captain Hook……

….if you’re listening, I really DO want to be a pirate. :D

busy, busy, busy

redesign of the site and blog happened at a good time. I’m swamped right now. Working on editing and designing TWO graphic novels, both over 100 pages long, potentially coloring some interesting new projects, doing a few commissions, and working on my own creator owned project more here. Still, I’m getting a lot done this week, and am scheduling work for June. So if you need a colorist for your comic, a digital painter or concept artist for an upcoming project feel free to get in touch. We’ve been making due here somehow, but it would be nice to line up enough paying gigs for the entire summer, that’s for sure. The search for a day job is going absolutely nowhere right now, so that would be one less thing to worry about.

Can’t wait to start getting actual pages done for the Rift in Time project. The script is really writing itself and I’m having a blast with it. Very fulfilling, and it’s going to be a great all ages kind of project, very visually appealing, fresh and fun I think. A distinct animated kind of Don Bluth look to it all as well.

back to work here, just taking a short break to fill the void with a progress report.

Virtual Comic book convention

figured that I’d set up a virtual table for the upcoming Facebook Comic Convention in March. Head on over to my page and join up, Jason Embury’s virtual table for the Facebook Comic Convention.

not much time for that much rambling right now. Working on Take a Chance #5 right now, as well as starting colors for 1001 Arabian Nights: Adventures of Sinbad #9, cooking dinner and taking care of a sick wife, running kids to basketball games and practices, and trying to find time to get some gaming in still. Not to mention planning out the rest of my year so I can get some personal projects completed too. and boy is that Prince of Persia for PS3 is addicting for some reason (i’ve got to get back to it some time soon here), and I’ve found myself playing some OLD SCHOOL Castlevania lately on the Wii. Who needs sleep right?

Friday morning thoughts

snow day = no school. It’s a bit more complicated than that really. We’re getting a decent snow storm today, some freezing rain, ice, and LOTS of snow. Somewhere between 8-12 inches by the time it’s done (which doesn’t factor in the ice all over everything I’m guessing) So no school today, which is fine with the kids I’m sure, and my wife now gets to keep all of the vanilla/chocolate/sprinkled covered pretzels she made last night, which I’m sure makes HER happy.

I’ve got one BIG deadline out of the way this month. I’ve got a couple days to finish up 6 pages of another book here, and then a 22 pager due by the 2nd of January, and yet another book due by the 13th of January. so really, I’ve got 3 more deadlines in the next 30 days I guess. Nothing wrong with being busy this time of year, or in this economy period. I just hope my body holds up over this stretch. It’s tough with the holidays and family this time of year to work this type of schedule. There’s just so much other things that you have to juggle on top of work. It can wear you down, if you let it :D

Alright, off to work here, after I get another cup of joe.

Take A Chance on a new superhero!

So, there’s a great new superhero comic debuting this month from author C.E. Murphy and published by Dabel Bros./Del Rey (coincidentally the same Del Rey where C.E. has multi novel deal) The are is amazing, penciled by Ardian Syaf with colors by yours truly. You can order directly online from HeavyInk.com for a discount on the book, subscribe to it as well and it will be shipped each month with your order.

So head over to HeavyInk.com and order your copy today.

That is all for today, I’ve got a busy day here getting 4 more pages of the Grimm Fairy Tales 2008 annual colored for Zenescope. I will leave you with the cover art to Take A Chance #3 which you can preorder right now as well though. I think Ardian and I did this cover in under 3 hours all things considered. Not too shabby! :D

Monday morning musings.

forgive the spelling mistakes today. just finished an all nighter, literally, and I could care less about how many spelling errors I make right now.

just wrapped up colors for Beyond Wonderland #4 with Nei Ruffino, Garry Henderson, and Blond (who came on at the last minute to save all our butts) The issue is made of complete AWESOME in my opinion, Dan Leister did an amazing job on the art for the book.

Put on a pot of coffee for my wife who’s waking up in about 5 minutes now, thinking of cooking a huge breakfast, and then crashing till the afternoon once these high rez files finish uploading. I probably won’t take off the entire day today, I’ll squeeze in another page or so I think likely as not. Strangely, not too tired right now, so if I can’t fall asleep I may just stay up all day and dork around.

this week, have to get the rest of our xmas shopping done, for the kids. I have a couple things left to get my wife, but I think we’re planning on heading into town on Friday to do shopping. then I’ll probably take the kids either Saturday or Sunday to pick up gifts for her.

It’s pretty apparent that I’m jumping all over the place right now too. It’s been really refreshing to have so much work lately, regardless of how busy it seems I am. I’d much rather be swamped right now, than be out of a job like so many other people. I think I’m doing some good work too, at least it seems that way to me :D I’m pretty happy with what I’ve been cranking out, and I’ve been cranking out a LOT of stuff. The first issue of my Dabel Bros. comic, Take A Chance is out this month. Can’t wait to get a copy of that and check it out, the art is fantastic, and I love the concept of the story (and the writing)

K, I’m losing it, it’s time to wrap things up, and get something to eat here, I’m starving!!!!!!

Quick random thoughts for Thursday.

Was a long day yesterday. Took my daughter to get her braces on yesterday morning. It was probably the LEAST stressful appointment I’ve ever taken her to for anything. She did a really good job of not getting too worked up, and she seems to be taking the right approach to getting braces. She likes them, and isn’t all upset about having to get them either, which is a good attitude to have considering she has to wear them for almost 2 years :D She toughed it out at school yesterday, and is still a little sore today as well, but she’s doing a good job handling it, and I’m proud of her.

It was a late night last night. Went to see the MSU/N. Carolina game at Ford Field with my son and his friend and his dad and brothers. Was a good time, and the kids had a blast. MSU got TRUCKED by 35 points, and they embarrassed Detroit, the auto industry, MSU and the LIONS on ESPN this morning when they played the highlights of the game, but the kids enjoyed going and staying up so late on a school night. My son was dragging this morning heading to school, and I won’t lie, I’M tired myself this morning too. I took some pictures, and shot a couple of short videos as well.

I finished a painting commission yesterday that I’ve had for a couple of weeks, and it turned out good I think. I’ve got 4 days less to finish my Grimm Fairy Tales annual here, but I’m DONE with prior commitments and stuff now until I’m finished with the book, so I’m looking to knock pages out like nobodys business the next week here. Then I have 6 pages left to finish up issue 3 of Take a Chance, then I MIGHT be tackling Grimm Fairy Tales issue 35 before the end of the year as well. So things are definitely busy on the work front. Somewhere in there, I have to find time to take the kids xmas shopping for their mom too.

I need another pot of coffee today for sure, and maybe another piece of the AWESOME peanut butter/chocolate fudge my wife made. mmmm, mmmmm good!!!!

Hero By Night TV series and what I REALLY think.

“you’re soul is alive but they want it for ransom..”

I’ll get to why I think that quote is so appropriate for creative individuals in a minute here.

So I woke up this morning, and noticed on my Twitterific widget that I installed on my desktop yesterday (a GREAT little app by the way) a whole bunch of interesting things going on out there in the world. None quite as interesting to me personally however, as the announcement by Platinum Studios that there is a Hero By Night live-action TV series in the works now.

My first instinct was to call up my good buddy DJ, who just happens to be the creator of said Hero By Night, and talk to him about this. I won’t get into what we talked about, where the conversation went, or any of that. Suffice to say, it was definitely a surprise I think. Especially for a creative team that was responsible for putting together that property, who were pretty much forced the hand they had to play by stopping production on the series earlier in the year and leaving a lot of fans and readers wondering what happened (and what happens next). NOW would be the perfect time for everyone involved in this entire mess to bury the hatchets, to maybe pay some money UPFRONT and get the ball rolling on continuing something like the Hero By Night universe. Get back to making the property RELEVANT in an online setting, and get that marketing and promotion engine running the way it should, and create something for TV land to get excited about. Generating even more material and mythos for them to work with. If that is even possible at this point. There IS a lot of bad blood. It has been dragged through the internet mud a lot in the last 6 months or so. Mostly because of the situation that surrounded the premature ending of the series. I STILL feel bad for bailing first on the thing, because it put DJ in a bad situation. But at the end of the day, I couldn’t justify to MY family or myself, continuing to invest so much time an effort into something that was taking time away from jobs that were actually bringing in money and helping us pay our bills each month.

Which sort of leads into what I’m thinking this morning. Artists in general, are some of the most under appreciated and maligned creatures on the planet. We are blessed with this strange ability to channel emotional and spiritual energies, whether they be our own or those that we are receiving from the Universe or from divine intervention, and portray them in a way that allows other people to transcend the limits of their imaginations. We can make people see and feel things they otherwise may not have thought of. We can move people in ways emotionally and psychologically that people who aren’t artists just cannot. In short we can share our dreams with others, and inspire dreams in other people.

In many ways, this same blessing is also our biggest curse. We often times spend nights lying awake in bed, after utterly exhausting days, unable to shut our minds down and sleep because our minds are in fact communing with some higher power. We have no other choice but to try and find the perfect form to create the vision, dream or idea that we have in our heads. Whether you want to call it a sickness or a responsibility, either one would probably be a correct categorization.

Where the real problem lies is when we as artists, decide to try to find a way to convey our artwork in such a way that it still is able to give us that sense that we are creating and realizing dreams, and yet are able to do that all the time, every day, and actually be paid for it. Nothing is a greater sense of accomplishment for an artist, than to be able to CREATE every day, and make a living doing it. We all strive at some level for acceptance. Not just artists, but everyone. We want to feel like what we do matters. That our actions make in a difference in our lives; that the choices we make matter.

So with all of that said, as an artist…our souls really are ALIVE and there is almost always a ransom involved. Whether it is a ransom to ourselves, in the form of sacrifices we make in our lives to realize our dreams, or whether it is a ransom to someone else where we trade our talents and abilities to bring other peoples dreams to life in exchange for the money which gives us the means to create and use our talents on a daily basis. Where we really put ourselves as artists into a bad position, is when our talents and abilities aren’t able to be compensated for. There are often a variety of reasons that lead people to not be able to pay an artist for their services. At the end of the day though, none of those reasons matter. We put not only our talents and abilities at the disposal of someone who hires us to create for them, but we also put our lives at their feet as well. We are by and large a group of people that rely on companies and clients to pay for our services. Unless you belong to a studio, work for a development company in film or video games, the chances are great that you are a freelancing artist. When you are a freelancer, you can only create so much work in a given time. You are not a studio, you are an individual. Your time is thus much more valuable, because the time you spend working on a project is time that you can’t get back. If you work for a month, turning down other jobs in that time, and you aren’t paid at the end of the month for your work, or you have to wait for money for weeks or months on end, then the entire time you spent working on that project is lost to you. The opportunities for other work have been lost to you as well. You don’t go and get your car fixed and then think that you can’t pay the mechanic or body shop for a month, or two or three. You don’t go into work every day, working 50 hours a week or more, and then NOT get paid every 2 weeks. 99.9% of people would walk away from a job that wasn’t paying them.

Our lives, the majority of the lives of those in this country right now, are lived paycheck to paycheck. Bills are due every 2 weeks. If you’re 2 months late paying your electric bill, they shut off your lights. If you’re 2 months late paying an artist, why wouldn’t they stop working on your project. It’s not a slam at anyone. It’s a FACT OF LIFE. Artists live paycheck to paycheck, by and large. We rely on money coming in the door. We can’t pay our mortgage if we don’t get paid for our work. Thus when we are faced with a situation where we can no longer wait for money to come in, we HAVE TO TAKE ON OTHER WORK THAT WILL PUT FOOD ON THE TABLE. It should not be frowned upon, it should not be looked down on, it should be actually a very simple concept to understand. If I can’t buy groceries because I haven’t been paid, I need to move on. If I was stocking shelves at the local Walmart, and my paycheck wasn’t there when I went to pick it up after 2 weeks, I’d be looking for a new job. It’s exactly the same with being a freelancer.

I’ve had companies not pay me on time this year. That is no secret. It’s happened on more than one occasion, it’s happened with more than one client. It’s become somewhat of a scary pattern. I AM paranoid of doing business with ANYONE and ANY company at this point, and I’m not alone. It seems that a LOT of artists, designers, painters, colorists and creators I know are feeling the same way. It’s become a sort of DISEASE it seems that is permeating a LOT of industries right now.

Creative talent is being taken for granted as it always has, but it seems that this problem is skyrocketing in direct correlation with the problems that we are facing as an economy. We have lived in a society of instant gratification for so long that now we are being forced to change that lifestyle. People have been consuming products, buying, spending and throwing money they don’t REALLY have around for years. Now more than ever, it’s become important for us to PAY for what we WANT and NEED only if we can afford it. If you can’t afford something, then you need to save your money and wait until you can. It’s one thing to buy a new TV on credit, and make small monthly payments or don’t pay for a year and then pay it all off. But you can’t have that mindset when you are dealing with freelance artists, and PEOPLE. We can’t willingly ransom our talents, abilities and dreams and give you 0% financing for 12 months. If you can’t pay an artist for their work, then just WAIT UNTIL YOU CAN.

So yeah, that might not be the most coherent rant in the world, but it’s honest. If anyone has had to put up with as much CRAP the last year as MY family has here, I’d love to hear YOUR story as well. I know of quite a few people out there that have had to deal with the same sorts of things as me already. All I can say is, we as artists and creators DO deserve better. However I also am beginning to think that we need to maybe find a way to circumvent traditional ways of creating art, and learn to make a living for ourselves. I’ve had to stop and do a few things around here this morning, one of which hasn’t been breakfast however, so if you bothered to read this far thanks. :D NOW I need to get around and get to work on a painting which is a xmas gift for the boyfriend of a very wonderful client who has been absolutely bubbly and actually paid 50% upfront :D

Waiting on pages…

doesn’t happen very often to me, since I color so many pages a month, but I’m in a position of waiting on pages here and it sucks. I HAVE work to do, but the release of that particular book is months away. The pages I’m waiting on are for a book that is due at the printer on August 13th. Needless to say, I’ve lost 2 or so days now and it sucks. Hopefully I can get that corrected today. I’d LIKE to have a few days off soon and not have to worry about killing myself before deadline as I enjoy them.

In other news, read a screenplay last night for a project I might be picking up. pay would be 100% upfront, I’d likely fly out to LA to meet with the creator and possibly the artist to go over the scope of the project, talk about visuals etc…. It’s a great story, a REALLY solid story actually. I’m also down with the payment terms, setting aside a 4 or 5 month block of time to work on it, and only worrying about that ONE project during the time, and a mini-series I’m starting mid-August. Would be a REAL nice wrap to a REALLY successful year for me here workwise. I’ve had plenty of bumps along the way this year, but really…I’m doing VERY well for myself and the future is looking extremely promising.

Still working on my creator owned project on the side here, going to be hard the next month or so what with coaching my son’s football team and stuff, but I’m really trying to roll this out now THIS YEAR, even it isn’t in August as planned. Where does the time go…..if I could answer that question I’d at least feel better about not having time to do everything I want or need to :D wouldn’t we all? :)
